Depth-dependent Relaxation of Articular Cartilage in Unconfined Compression

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Articular cartilage (AC) is an inhomogeneous, anisotropic and multiphasic composite. Depth-dependent strain distribution in full thickness AC has previously been investigated with optical methods (Guilak, 1995; Schinagl, 1997; Wang, 2003). Depth and time-dependent compressive strain has been predicted with theoretical models (Li, 2000; Wang, 2001). Most recently, Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) has been employed to measure depth-dependent strain on AC cross-sections in response to incrementally applied strain (Erne, 2003). In this study, we used ESPI to measure depth and time-dependent strain over the cross-section of AC. We hypothesized, that the strain in the superficial zone of AC will increase during relaxation, while strain in the deep zones will decrease.

Dynamic measurement of internal solid displacement in articular cartilage using ultrasound backscatter.
Mechanics of articular cartilage can be represented using poroelastic theories where fluid and solid displacements are viscously coupled to create a time-dependent spatially heterogeneous behavior. In recent models of this tissue, finite element methods have been used to predict tissue deformation as a function of time for adult articular cartilage bearing a characteristic depth-dependent struc...
متن کاملTime and depth dependent Poisson's ratio of cartilage explained by an inhomogeneous orthotropic fiber embedded biphasic model.
A time- and depth-dependent Poisson's ratio has been observed during unconfined compression experiments on articular cartilage, but existing cartilage models have not fully addressed these phenomena. The goal of this study was to develop a model which is able to predict and explain these phenomena, while also being able to fit other experimental scenarios on full depth cartilage specimens such ...
متن کاملA cross-validation of the biphasic poroviscoelastic model of articular cartilage in unconfined compression, indentation, and confined compression.
The biphasic poroviscoelastic (BPVE) model was curve fit to the simultaneous relaxation of reaction force and lateral displacement exhibited by articular cartilage in unconfined compression (n=18). Model predictions were also made for the relaxation observed in reaction force during indentation with a porous plane-ended metal indenter (n=4), indentation with a nonporous plane ended metal indent...
متن کاملHeterogeneous three-dimensional strain fields during unconfined cyclic compression in bovine articular cartilage explants.
Articular cartilage provides critical load-bearing and tribological properties to the normal function of diarthrodial joints. The unique properties of cartilage, as well as heterogeneous deformations during mechanical compression, are due to the nonuniform microstructural organization of tissue components such as collagens and proteoglycans. A new cartilage deformation by tag registration (CDTR...
متن کاملAn ultrasonic measurement for in vitro depth-dependent equilibrium strains of articular cartilage in compression.
The equilibrium depth-dependent biomechanical properties of articular cartilage were measured using an ultrasound-compression method. Ten cylindrical bovine patella cartilage-bone specimens were tested in compression followed by a period of force-relaxation. A 50 MHz focused ultrasound beam was transmitted into the cartilage specimen through a remaining bone layer and a small hole at the centre...
